Cool Tools - Auto Text Expander
Are you like me and frequently do things the hard way? Like typing out the same messages over and over again?
If so, you’re going to love Google Chrome’s Auto Text Expander. This nifty time-saver lets you insert snippets of code, phrases, hashtags, long links, reports, or even email addresses and signatures into an array of online platforms in a snap.
For those who work collaboratively and create team templates or manage large repositories of shared text, it’s a wonder tool. As a writer and workshop facilitator, I use it when crafting newsletters and blogs, or for customizing lesson plans. It’s handy for attaching my bio to articles or when networking on LinkedIn or answering FAQs.
Auto Text Expander improves accuracy, consistency, and productivity. Best of all, it’s free!
Here’s how it works:
Google: www.YourAutoText.com, which takes you to the Chrome store.
Click the “Add to Chrome” button. (Google will ask if you want to add the extension, click “Yes”)
Once downloaded, the (txt)r icon will appear on the browser bar. Click on it to open the app.
Next, it’s as simple as writing out your text, assigning a shortcode to it, and clicking Save. Like this:
A word of caution: be sure to create codes that aren’t likely to be real words or use all caps to avoid auto-populating text when you don’t want it.
Whether using your office desktop, laptop or even a friend’s computer, when you log into Google, Auto Text Expander syncs across them all.
Text expanders are also available on your mobile device. Text expanders are accessible through the settings functions on your iPhone or iPad. For Android users, download Textpand from the Google Play Store, and you’re on your way.
If you’re not a fan of Google Chrome, paid apps like TextExpander do a similar job, but why pay when there’s an excellent and free alternative?
What do you think? Are you a text expander user? What are some of the favourite ways that you make use of this very cool tool?
